Washington, DC. – April 18, 2019 – On April 9, 2019, Dr. William Padula, NPUAP Treasurer, and Dr. Janet Luddigan, NPUAP President, provided written testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations; Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies to explore new payment models that could further increase innovation and incentivize the prevention or pressure injuries.

Dr. William Padula is Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical & Health Economics in the School of Pharmacy and Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics at University of Southern California. Dr. Janet Cuddigan is Professor of Nursing at University of Nebraska. Together, they informed the Subcommittee of increasing concerns regarding pressure injuries in the U.S. and what steps can be taken to improve the outlook in U.S. health care for vulnerable patients.

Dr. Padula cited from his paper, Value of hospital resources for effective pressure injury prevention: a cost-effectiveness analysis that “The national cost of hospital-acquired pressure injuries in the United States”, revealing that “pressure injuries affect 2.5 million patients, resulting in 60,000 deaths and over $26 billion in U.S. health care expenditures”. Drs. Padula and Cuddigan also brought to the Subcommittee’s attention that even though Medicare has introduced advanced payment models related to pressure injury prevention, they appear “to have leveled off” and possibly need a revamp.

The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP), in partnership with the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) and Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance (PPPIA) will be hosting a special event to celebrate the launch of the 2019 International Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries on November 15-16, 2019 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
