Skin Substitutes

Tissue of human origin or bio-engineered tissue used to 1) support wound closure and 2) serve as a replacement for skin and surgical grafting. A bio-engineered skin substitute closely resembles human skin in structure, function and handling and may provide both epidermal and dermal components. Indicated for the treatment of partial- and full-thickness skin ulcers due to venous insufficiency of greater than one month’s duration and which have not adequately responded to conventional ulcer therapy. Also indicated for treatment of full-thickness diabetic foot ulcers. The wound bed should be debrided of fibrotic and necrotic tissues before application. Always check the expiration date to ensure product viability and follow manufacturer’s instructions for use and application. May be part of a procedure billed using a CPT code.
