Moisture barriers are cream, gel, ointment, or paste preparations formulated to protect the skin from excessive moisture, due to incontinence, perspiration, or wound drainage. Indicated for use on stage 1 pressure injuries, on periwound skin to prevent maceration, and on pressure points and bony prominences for the prevention of skin breakdown. Ingredients vary based on the manufacturer's formulation, but most common skin protectants are dimethicone, petrolatum, and zinc oxide.
