Beds: Powered & Air-Fluidized

Powered and air-fluidized beds are semi-electric or completely electric hospital support surfaces with a fully integrated powered mattress that has a total height of 3 inches or greater and a surface designed to reduce friction and shear. An air-fluidized support surface employs the circulation of filtered air through silicone-coated ceramic beads, creating the characteristics of fluid. Indicated for patients with stage 3 and 4 pressure ulcers or post-operative myocutaneous flaps or skin grafts.

An air-fluidized support surface employs the circulation of pressurized, temperature-controlled air through silicone-coated ceramic beads, creating the characteristics of fluid.

Powered air-fluidized support surfaces feature the following general performance properties and attributes:
• Helps manage microclimate by reducing pressure, friction, shear, moisture and heat
• Minimizes soft tissue deformation and maintains near normal blood flow
• Helps improve patient comfort
• Aids and protects staff during patient repositioning

Powered and air-fluidized beds are indicated for patients with stage 3 and 4 pressure ulcers or post-operative myocutaneous flaps or skin grafts. These beds may also be indicated for the prevention of pressure ulcer formation in at-risk patients, and for the safe handling and repositioning of bariatric patients.

Air-fluidized therapy is specifically indicated for patients with extensive burns to facilitate healing and increase patient comfort.

Powered and air-fluidized beds are contraindicated for use on unstable spinal fractures or for cervical traction.

In patients with severe burns, air-fluidized therapy is known to cause dehydration.
