The Post-Acute Wound and Skin Integrity Council (PAWSIC) announced on September 30, 2026, the release of a new position paper that they share makes the case for dedicated ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes for skin failure. According to a recent email announcement:
"Version 1.1 sets out the clinical rationale and evidence for a dedicated skin failure code framework. It is framed as a call to begin the coding conversation, designed to be refined as evidence develops, rather than a claim that the science is settled.
The paper is written for wound care clinicians, medical coders, post-acute care leaders, researchers, and professional organizations involved in skin integrity and patient care."
Jeanine Maguire, PhD, MPT, CWS, FCPP, President of PAWSIC, said about the launch, "I am incredibly proud of the PAWSIC Skin Failure Codes Position Paper. It represents years of collaborative dedication from our interdisciplinary clinical team, capturing the rich history of this condition, addressing current gaps, and grounding our approach firmly in patient-centered care."
Interested partied can read or download the position paper on the PAWSIC website, and also have the opportunity to endorse the paper.
