Leading guidelines from IWII, WRR, and NPIAP reinforce that "microbial colonies begin to reform within 24 hrs. after debridement" while "slough and necrotic tissue can promote bacterial growth... [and] prevent the formation of granulation tissue." Research also confirms that "more frequent debridement was associated with improving healing." Yet, traditional debridement remains a challenge.
In 2023, the JWC International Consensus Guidelines for Best practices of wound debridement, stated that “approx. 60% of patient’s wounds are not debrided enough” and that using “more than one debridement method may be needed.” This concept is referred to as Integral Debridement which emphasizes combining complementary methods of debridement rather than using standalone approaches.
