Debridement Agents

Debridement agents provide selective or non-selective removal of necrotic tissue or debris from chronic lesions, such as pressure injuries, diabetic ulcers, burns, post-operative wounds, trauma wounds, and infected wounds. Must be covered with a primary dressing. Always read the package insert and use according to manufacturer's recommendations. May be part of a procedure billed using a CPT® code.

Debridement agents are enzymes, hypertonic saline or other topical formulations that provide selective or non-selective removal of necrotic tissue or debris from a wound. These agents must be covered with a primary dressing.

Debridement agents feature the following general performance properties and attributes:
• Removes necrotic tissue, allowing wound healing to progress
• Some specifically target necrotic tissue to avoid harming fragile new tissue

Debridement agents are indicated for debridement of necrotic tissue and liquefaction of slough in acute and chronic lesions, such as pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, burns, post-operative wounds, trauma wounds, and infected wounds.

Debridement agents are generally contraindicated for use on patients with a known sensitivity to any of the components of the agent.
